Our Story
Gidan Masa was born from a legacy that spans generations, continents, and countless moments of joy shared around food.
Our story begins in the small town of Tudun Salmanu in Bauchi State, Northern Nigeria, where Rahila's mother built something extraordinary. While excelling in the medical field, she created a thriving masa business that became beloved throughout the community. Her secret wasn't just in the recipe; it was in the love, precision, and dedication she poured into every batch.
At just six years old, Rahila stood beside her mother, hands dusted with flour, learning the art of masa-making that had been perfected over the years. Those early morning lessons became more than cooking instructions; they were moments of connection, cultural preservation, and the passing down of family tradition. Alongside her siblings, Rahila absorbed not just techniques, but the understanding that food is how we tell our stories, celebrate our heritage, and build community.
When Rahila moved to Canada, she carried those memories and that treasured family recipe with her. Masa had already become a family business, thriving both in Nigeria and among the diaspora. But something was missing in Toronto, the authentic taste of home, prepared with the same excellence and care her mother had taught her.
Enter Omotola, Rahila's husband and partner in every sense of the word. A master of the grill with over a decade of experience dating back to his college days, Omotola brings his own expertise and passion to Gidan Masa. Together, this Nigerian-Canadian couple created something beautiful: a place where tradition meets innovation, where every suya is perfectly charred, every masa perfectly crispy, and every dish tells the story of West Africa.
